What Brisbane businesses should do before their next Citrix renewal

Citrix renewals are forcing SEQ businesses into a decision window. Here is a practical sequence to evaluate AVD, Azure Local, and whether your MSP can actually deliver the migration.

If you run Citrix for remote staff in Brisbane or across SEQ, you have probably seen the renewal quote and felt the same thing every MD tells us: this is more than we budgeted, and we are not sure we want another three years of the same pain.

Renewals are not just a finance problem. They are a forcing function. The businesses that treat renewal season as a migration planning window — not a rubber-stamp — usually save money and fix years of logon issues, VPN instability, and helpdesk load at the same time.

Step 1: Benchmark what Citrix actually costs you

Licence line items are only part of the story. Add helpdesk tickets tagged desktop or remote access, VPN support, the internal time spent on image management, and the opportunity cost when staff cannot work reliably from home or site.

Most growing businesses discover the true number is 30–50% higher than the renewal quote alone. That makes Azure Virtual Desktop or a hybrid Azure Local approach easier to justify — even before you factor in performance improvements.

Step 2: Decide migrate vs renew with a 90-day lens

Renew if your environment is stable, your users are happy, and you have documented DR — rare in the sub-100 staff band we work with.

Migrate if logons are slow, images are brittle, DR is untested, or your MSP has never delivered a wave migration. SEQ businesses with users in Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sydney often see the biggest UX win from AVD with Entra ID conditional access and MFA enforced properly.

Step 3: Run a pilot before you sign anything

Pick one department — 10–20 users — and stand up a parallel AVD host pool. Measure logon time, app performance, and support tickets for two weeks against your Citrix baseline.

A pilot de-risks the board conversation. It also exposes whether your identity, networking, and M365 security baseline are ready for production cutover — gaps that become expensive if discovered mid-migration.

When to bring in senior delivery (not just your MSP)

MSPs keep the lights on. Wave migrations, identity hardening, and cutover planning need project leadership and architecture experience your helpdesk partner may not scope.

North Ark works alongside existing MSPs: we design and deliver the migration; they continue BAU support. Brisbane-based, onsite for cutovers when it matters.
