VMware licensing changes and hardware refresh cycles are pushing QLD businesses toward Azure Local and hybrid Azure. Here is when that path beats Citrix renewal or a full cloud lift-and-shift.
Queensland businesses with on-prem VMware clusters face a familiar pattern: renewal shock, aging hosts, and apps that cannot move to pure public cloud without latency or compliance pain. Azure Local (Azure Stack HCI) is increasingly the third path — not renew VMware, not lift everything to AVD, but modernise on-prem with Azure-managed hybrid.
The businesses that succeed treat Azure Local as a platform decision with a migration programme — not a hardware refresh quote from a vendor who skips runbooks and DR testing.
Hyperconverged infrastructure with Azure Arc management, integrated Azure services, and a path to run Azure IaaS-style workloads locally. Useful when you need low-latency access to ERP, imaging, or plant systems while still connecting to M365 and AVD for office users.

Inventory VMs, dependencies, and storage first. Wave non-critical workloads, validate backup and restore, then tackle line-of-business systems with rollback plans.
DR is not optional: document RPO/RTO, test failover, and assign owners. Hybrid estates fail when Azure Local is treated as "set and forget."
