The client

The client is a multinational industrial machinery company. Several hundred virtual desktops, serving more than 4,000 users, ran on VMware.

Why the work started

Citrix and VMware renewals were both due, and the virtual desktop estate had to have a new home before they landed.

What was done

  1. Design: the Azure Local platform for the virtual desktop estate, sized for the users it had to serve.
  2. Build: the Azure Local platform built and prepared for production.
  3. Migrate: several hundred virtual desktops moved off VMware.
  4. Scope: production servers stayed on VMware, so the project focused on the desktops.

Results

  • Several hundred virtual desktops for more than 4,000 users running on Azure Local.
  • Design, build and migration delivered in three months.

Why it matters

A renewal deadline doesn't mean everything has to move at once. Moving the virtual desktop estate, and leaving the production servers where they were, kept the work to three months.
