MSP transition checklist
Use this when changing managed service providers, or adding a new provider alongside your current one. Work through it before notice is given.
Before notice
- Your organisation holds admin credentials for Microsoft 365, Azure, the domain registrar, DNS, firewalls and backups
- Contract terms for handover and notice periods checked
- Licensing accounts and vendor support contracts in your name
- The new provider's scope agreed in writing
Handover
- Network diagrams, asset lists and configuration backups received
- Runbooks, open tickets and known issues received
- An overlap period agreed, with incident responsibility clear for each day
- Services moved one at a time

Access
- Outgoing provider accounts and remote access tools removed
- Shared and service account credentials rotated
- Delegated admin relationships reviewed and removed where no longer needed
- Privileged access reviewed
First month
- Backups running and a restore tested
- Monitoring on critical systems
- Certificate and licence expiries checked
- Most exposed systems patched
- Risk register started and first monthly report delivered
- Responsibility matrix signed if more than one provider remains
