Sample monthly engineering report
This is a sample. It shows the structure of the monthly engineering report and the kind of entries it contains. The example entries are written for illustration and are not taken from a client environment.
Summary
A short paragraph for leadership: the state of the environment, what changed, what needs a decision.
Example: "Two changes this month closed open risks. One incident affected users at one site for part of a morning; the cause is fixed. We need a decision on the certificate authority replacement before the next quarter."
Changes shipped
Every material change, each linked to the pull request that made it.
- Example: Conditional Access now requires phishing-resistant MFA for admin portals. Reviewed and merged, with the policy in the repository.
- Example: Backup retention for file servers aligned with the agreed recovery priorities.
- Example: New spoke network for the finance application, built from the standard module.

Incidents and root causes
- Example: Branch users unable to reach an Azure-hosted application. Cause: MTU mismatch on the branch VPN path. Permanent fix: MSS clamping applied through the network pipeline. Status: complete.
Risk register movement
- Closed: example, legacy authentication still allowed for two service accounts.
- Added: example, domain controllers running an operating system that leaves support next year.
- Changed priority: example, certificate authority replacement moved up after an audit request.
Operational health
- Patch compliance by system group, with every exception named and dated
- Backup job results and this month's restore tests, with what was restored and how long it took
- Security posture against the controls in scope: MFA coverage, privileged accounts, Defender alerts closed
- Certificates and licences expiring in the next quarter
Cost
- Spend against last month and budget, with the reasons for any movement
- Savings made this month and savings proposed for approval
Automation and documentation added
- Example: Server build now runs from the image pipeline for all new Windows servers.
- Example: Runbook written for recovering the payroll application, and used in this month's restore test.
Next month and decisions needed

- Decisions needed from you, each with a recommendation
